HISTORY OF THE BELLEVILLE CHURCH OF GOD

The Belleville Church of God takes its name from the city where it is located, Belleville, Illinois. The group has its roots in the Worldwide Church of God (WCG) which established a congregation in Belleville, in the 1960's, to serve those called through the World Tomorrow radio and television broadcasts.

During the late 1980's and into the early 1990's, the WCG abandoned its bible-based teachings and instead adopted teachings from mainstream Christianity. In good conscience, a small group of nineteen individuals left the WCG in July of 1993, as a result of the changes, and formed the nucleus of what would ultimately be known as the Belleville Church of God.

In August of 1993 the small group was officially recognized as a church congregation by the Global Church of God. Beginning in December of 1994 through the spring of 1995, as a result of more brethren becoming aware of the apostasy within the WCG, the Belleville group saw their numbers more than triple.

The group remained a part of the Global Church of God until that organization's dissolution near the end of 1998. Since then, the Belleville group has chosen not to join itself with any of the existing WCG splinter groups, and soon after took “Belleville Church of God” as its official name.

The Belleville Church of God recognizes that the Church of God is a spiritual organism, not a physical organization. We see our purpose as one of ministering to the needs of the scattered brethren that God sees fit to bring into contact with us. Since we recognize that God's people may or may not be affiliated with various groups or organizations, yet be part of God's true Church, we welcome any member who wishes to find fellowship with us in peace.
